This summer was my first time visiting Chincoteague, Virginia. The island town is known for its wildlife and outdoor activities, but I've found something that should be added to that list. My family and I ate some delicious seafood during our stay, but the best part of every meal were the incredible desserts offered by the local restaurants.
My first dinner reservation was at Bill's Prime Seafood & Steaks located on Main Street. Even after eating their "Colossal Lobster Tail" for dinner, I wanted three more slices of the White Chocolate Coconut Cream Pie. Starting with the pie crust being jam-packed with sweet buttery flavor to the custard-like white chocolate filling. There was not a strong coconut presence in the filling, but the toasted coconut garnish brought the perfect amount of flavor and a different aspect of texture. It felt indulgent while also light and airy at the same time. An absolute must try when dining at this restaurant.
My second reservation was at Aj's on the Creek located on Maddox Boulevard where I have two desserts to highlight. Starting with the house made Key Lime Pie. I do not typically gravitate towards most key lime pies, but this one hit all the right notes. The graham cracker crust stayed very fresh, keeping a crunchy texture, and perfectly buttery sweet. This filling also felt very light with a balance of citrusy, tangy, and sweet flavor. The perfectly creamy and smooth texture of the filling took the pie to another level. Every detail down to the freshly made whipped cream and key lime zest was spectacular.
The second dessert I tried was the Cherry Hand Pies with Vanilla Ice Cream. The hand pies were served warm and crispy. The cherry filling would pour out with every bite full of a balance of tart and sweet heaven. That filling wrapped in a crisp buttery crust dipped into creamy vanilla ice cream left me speechless. My advice is to leave lots of room to try the desserts when dining at Aj's!
I have found the island for all my friends with a major sweet tooth like me!
